Trout: Trout fishing has closed on all portions of the lower Deschutes adjoining the Warm Springs Reservation but trout fishing has continued to be really good from the northern reservation deadline down to the confluence of the White River. The river has been really stable over the last week of so and that has helped fishing quite a bit. Midges, BWO's and slate wing duns are the bugs on the menu up top. Big stonefly nymphs with an egg, BWO, or midge dropper are producing well, and keep your eyes on the surface in the afternoons. We saw a good number of rising fish this last trip.

Steelhead: The fish are present in good numbers in most of the lower 100 miles of the Deschutes right now, but best fishing has been above the locked gate. Water temps in the lower river continue to fall predictably with the cooler nights, but are between 45 and 48 degrees out of the dam, and cooler as you move downriver. Sink tips are the way to go, but down get too crazy. We found nearly all the fish this week on a type 3 tip and lightly weighted(bead-chain eyes) leach pattern. As the water cools we are having much more luch with bigger patterns in dark colors. Make sure you finish all of your swing! Many of the takes are fairly subtle, so have patience. Let the fish eat your fly before tightening up! And for those of you fishing under a bobber, that continues to be effective too.
