Near Perfect

A very productive beginning; near perfect paced sport fishing for yellowfin tuna mixed in grade from 40 - 130 pounds. We could have handled a little faster action but as an introduction to this magical island what we had was fine. Actually, at one to three fish hooked for the better part of five hours they added up nicely. Along with a couple of handfuls of nice yellowtail the day closed strong in the win column.

And so begins our 2018 season with Guadalupe as one of our many fishing options. It is a beautiful thing. The opportunity to fish recreationally in this amazing setting is a privilege that can not be overstated. Much gratitude is extended to the Government of Mexico and all the agencies and businesses that work together in the permitting process. It is a challenging experience not without obstacles. Once through the labyrinth however it all becomes worth it. One day out here when it is on explains why.

Settled in and ready to make the most of whatever we find the flat calm lee is the place to be both daytime and night. Yet another benefit of the time spent at this incredible destination; the vast majority of the tuna we find are usually somewhere along the giant lee.

Photo today features first time Royal Star angler and daughter of long time Royal Star friend and angler Art Holcomb. At 17 years young Katie had a banner day landing not only her first yellowfin tuna but four that were 40 - 130#’s, and a nice yellowtail! All taken on the flylined sardine with 80# fluorocarbon there is no denying that the day belonged to Katie in a big way. She started the day as a genuine novice and ended as an advisor. What a cool moment for both Katie and her dad Art who was rightly glowing watching his daughter hone her skills at tuna catching. Having a 17 year old daughter myself I couldn’t help but be captivated by the experience. Congrats to Katie on an epic day. This image is of tuna #4, a modest 90 pounder, sliding over the rail in the late afternoon. What a day!
