In January, thoughts of fishing turn to Northern California near the Oregon border. The rivers still run wild there, and steelhead can reach twenty pounds or more.

The Smith River is a prime example. Not only is it one of the most scenic rivers in America, it's also one of the purest, cleanest rivers. Set among the redwoods, wildlife abounds along this fast-clearing undammed river. It's how God meant it to be.

Since the Smith River drains to the ocean, it takes a couple of good storms to punch open the natural gravel bar at the river's mouth. Well, the rains have come, and so have the fish.

Several beautiful chrome-bright steelhead have been caught on the Smith this week, and the recent rains should bring up many more.

The Smith River is in a Class of Its Own

When it comes to steelhead, the Smith River is in a class of its own. Every year, steelhead over 20 pounds are caught here, and it's the only river in California where anglers have a chance at a steelhead of this size.

These bright chrome steelhead are strong, feisty, and fresh from the sea. That means every hookup is a battle to remember. While steelhead are sometimes referred to as "the fish of 1,000 casts," a hookup with one of these speedy chromers is an unforgettable experience.

With the provided light fishing tackle and easy-to-use spinning reels, even beginning anglers can catch the Smith River's magnificent steelhead. In January, thoughts of fishing turn to Northern California near the Oregon border.
