Anglers have been reporting good trout fishing lately between Warm Springs, Mecca, Trout Creek and Maupin. Anglers are reporting good action on nymphs and excellent dry fly-fishing during evening hatches. ‌

There have been more reports of Chinook being caught in the lower Deschutes. Many salmon anglers fish at Sherars Falls, the only section where bait is allowed. ‌

Steelhead angling has been consistent over the past few weeks on the Deschutes. Anglers have been successful on the fly and gear fishing. Poor air quality due to wildfire smoke has kept some people away. ‌

The Deschutes Steelhead Fishery Framework was established in 2021 and defines standards for opening or closing the steelhead sport fishery. Based on counts of wild steelhead over Bonneville Dam, steelhead fishing will remain open on the Deschutes River in 2023. ‌

From July 15 through Sept. 15, the section of the Deschutes River from Moody Rapids downstream to the westbound I-84 will be closed to all fishing and retention for the Thermal Angling Sanctuary closure.
