(January 4, 2010 - San Bernardino, CA) The second derby in the series of San Bernardino County Regional Parks' trout derbies moves to Yucaipa Regional Park this Saturday, January 9th.

Last year, Yucaipa lakes held the record for the largest catch of the season when a 19 1/2 pound trout was caught during their trout derby. Mike Nguyen, Rancho Cucamonga, winner of the Cucamonga-Guasti derby last December 2009 took top place with an 11 lb., 11 oz. fish. Steady rain made it more challenging for both the anglers and their catches during that event.

County sponsored derbies provide an opportunity for Southland fisherman to compete against one another to catch the largest trout in the fastest time. Up to 50 prizes in cash or merchandise are awarded to top competitors. County lakes are frequently stocked for trout season and the lakes received trophy sized trout on December 31st. Sierra Bow, close cousins of the wild rainbow trout, are included in the plantings.

Yucaipa Regional Park's Trout Derby will get started at 7:00 a.m. this Saturday and will run to 1:00 p.m. Park gates open at 6:00 a.m. Derby registration is $15 and there is a $10 vehicle entry fee. A state fishing license is required and may be purchased at the park.

The derby season continues with Prado Regional Park, Chino hosting the next event on February 6th; Mojave Narrows, Victorville on March 20th and the final derby will occur at Glen Helen in northern San Bernardino on April 6th.

Active Outdoors, a program of San Bernardino County Regional Parks, offers Junior Fishing Workshops to teach children ages 5-11 the fundamentals of fishing. Each child learns the parts of the fishing pole, how to tie a line, casting and catching. There is a $5 registration fee.
