First 300 pounder of the season on the long range boats

Just the facts
Congrats to Dave Povey for the first 300 pounder of the 2010/11 season on the Royal Star or any other long range boat. It weighed 320 on the boat's scale, an unofficial weight for any kind of IGFA record purposes, but okay by me.

Tim Ekstrom's report on the catch is full of superlatives expounding on how Povey did everything right, but offers no details on just how that occurred.

The right gear is the right gear for sure, but details are welcome even though obvious to someone like Tim who has seen it all time after time.

Meanwhile the intrepid Bill Roecker and Paul Sweeney were struck down by illness and unable to chronicle and photograph the 14 or more tuna over 200 pounds that came in aboard the Royal Polaris today (Thursday). Let's hope one of them feels well enough to capture the beasts boarded by the anglers on the Independence. A big tip of the hat to Bill and Paul for being on the scene way more often that not. In fact, I can't remember a time that this ever happened before, and I dont expect it will happen again -- at least after they get better from the flu/cold that has laid them low.

All I know is I expect several more fish over 300 pounds to be caught and even actually weighed on the certified scales at Fisherman's Landing in the next couple weeks.

These are the days that try mens souls -- the men (and women) stuck on the beach, anyway.
