The new stock on January 23 and the rainy weather really have the fish on a rampage! It seems as if the trophy trout have finally come out to play as we have had numerous fish over six pounds weighed in at the dock and several others reported that didn't get weighed in. Jose Velazquez, pictured above hooked up with the monster of the year on Friday, January 25 and reeled in a beautiful 13.5 pound trophy Tailwalker! It measured 31 inches in length. He was using a nightcrawler and fishing to the north of the Fish Float. For more pictures, please visit http://www.poway.org/lakepoway and click on Fish Reports.

The shoreline was very productive in ALL areas on Wednesday and Thursday with limits being taken out from every area. There was a slight slowdown on Friday. However, the Fish Float, Half Moon Bay, and Bucktail Bay were productive and the monster trout was caught around mid-day in the rain. It seems as if the fish are being caught equally on jigs and still fishing with nightcrawlers and powerbait while they are close to shore. Once they move to deeper water, still fishing will be the method of choice. Boats have found success by slow trolling or drifting nightcrawlers or lures in deeper water. Thomas Buoyants are still proving successful and once you catch a fish or get a bite; stop the boat and cast. This week boats have done well from Pine Point to Bucktail Bay once again. But the newly stocked trout have been close to shore so if there is a spot free of shoreline fishermen around Bucktail, it's not a bad idea to fish some shallow areas as well. The older stocks are still deep. Boats have been getting limits since Dec. 30 by anchoring about 30-50 yards from shore and dropping green Powerbait on the bottom with a 2 foot leader. Most anglers will also combine inflated nightcrawlers or Powerworms with the Powerbait.

The catfish are still biting for those that try. They are on the Log Boom, on the North Shore, Fishing Float, in the Middle of the Lake...you name the place and they are still being caught. I would focus on the mouth of Hidden Bay in a boat or Half Moon Bay from shore. If you are in a boat, try the Log Boom first. Mackerel, Chicken Liver, and Shrimp are still the way to go.
