To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Half day bass boats are available weekdays for 35$ each.

The trout fishing has been good, but the bite is beginning to move west toward deeper, cooler waters. The final plant of the season is scheduled for this Wednesday April 23rd. Melanie Hartley of Oceanside had the biggest trout of the past week at 6.15#s caught in Oakvale Cove using chartreuse powerbait. Wayne Ring of Carlsbad came in a close second with his 5.80# rainbow caught on a nightcrawler on Senior Shoreline. Powerbait and inflated nightcrawlers have been the best baits.

The bass fishing has been improving thanks to an abundance of shad in the shallows. Tanner Forman of Alpine, caught and released a 5.05# bass in Boat Dock Cove on jerk-bait. Bass can be found near structure, and respond best to crawdads, shad raps, or dark colored plastics.

It's Easter time and the crappie are spawning. The crappie are biting best in the early morning hours anywhere where there are rocky outcroppings. Wendell Jackson of Escondido caught a 2.35# crappie with a live golden shiner on Senior Shoreline. Crappie are most often caught using mini-jigs or live golden shiners.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
