To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Half day bass boats are available weekdays for 35$ each.

The trout fishing has been good following Wednesday's plant. The final plant of the season is scheduled for Wednesday April 23rd. Blaine Avalle of Valley Center had the biggest trout of the past week at 4.65#s caught in Oakvale Cove using powerbait. Powerbait and inflated nightcrawlers have been the best baits.

The bass fishing showed signs of improvement this week. Plentiful shad in close to the shore, and the crappie beginning to spawn, might have contributed to this. Mike Sanchez of Downey, California caught a 6.50# largemouth near the West Buoys on a fake crawdad. Bass can be found near structure, and respond best to crawdads, shad raps, or dark colored plastics.

The crappie are beginning to spawn. The crappie are biting best in the early morning hours anywhere where there are rocky outcroppings. Rudy Renteria of San Marcos caught a 2.40# crappie Friday on Senior Shoreline using a pink and white crappie jig They are most often caught using mini-jigs or live golden shiners.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
