Shaver Lake on fire

Shaver Lake - Shaver Lake, CA (Fresno County)

Multiple limits of rainbows within a couple hours is the norm for everyone. The big planting of trout by DF&W recently has drawn hundreds of fishermen from all over to the lake. It has to be one of the most fished lakes in California. Dick Nichols of Dick's Fishing Charters says it is easy limits fast for his clients the past two weeks, the problem is most are within two hours of their fishing start. "You have to cull out the smaller ones and keep the bigger ones to allow guest fishermen to spend a morning on the lake", Nichols says. "There are so many fish at various levels in the front part of the lake near the dam, but they are spreading everyday", Nichols added. The Point and the island are also hot spots, but Nichols thinks they will move to the Stevenson Creek area soon and hang out in September like they have for the past several years. He is using orange or pink Apex tipped with crawlers on the down riggers at 55 feet down, and Trout Busters tipped with crawlers, behind weighted Mountain Flashers at 125 feet back, which equates to about 23 feet down. The bank fishermen have surrounded the Sierra Marina, and are lined up at the dam and roads 1 and 2 dragging in fish everyday. Hey, it is good at Shaver right now and everyone is reaping their rewards. Bank fishermen are using mostly trout dough bait in rainbow or orange or night crawlers. The smallmouth bass bite is outstanding. Dick Nichols (559) 841-3317; Shaver Lake Marina (559) 841-3324; Shaver Lake Sports (559) 841-2740
