Hot trout, smallie bite at Shaver

Shaver Lake - Shaver Lake, CA (Fresno County)

Most fishing Shaver Lake go home with limits, says Dick Nichols, of Dick's Fishing Charters in Shaver Lake. The trout bite has been awesome with more big fish coming in this week. Nichols says all his clients have limited out all week with nice rainbows to 4 pounds and a few kokanee. He and other regular kokanee fishermen like Earl Taniguchi of Fresno, have been fishing down 82 feet in 95 feet of water. Nichols likes the orange Apex lures tipped with corn behind a Captain Jack's C.J. Dodger for the down riggers. The side pole activity is increasing at 20 feet down with Trout Busters tipped with crawler behind weighted Mountain Flashers. The Point, island and Black Rock have all been good producing areas. The down side is occasional heavy smoke from the Rough Fire that can cover the lake and make for uncomfortable conditions. There are days that the lake is clear of smoke. There is much less power boat activity, allowing boat fishermen to experience calm water. The surface water temperature is 69.9 degrees causing the majority of game fish to be down in the water column. Simply it is a good time to fish! Bank fishermen are scoring pretty good in the roads 1,2 and 3 areas, along with the shoreline near the dam. Trout dough bait or crawlers are used most. Crickets and a rocky area spell fantastic small mouth fishing right now. Dick Nichols (559) 841-3317; Shaver Lake Marina (559) 841-3324; Shaver Lake Sports (559) 841-2740
