New Hogan Reservoir Fishing Report

New Hogan Reservoir - Valley Springs, CA (Calaveras County)

by Ron Howe

New Hogan lake is steadily rising and the water is clarity is falling with the rush of muddy water coming in from the recent storms. The main body has 3’-6’ of clarity but will likely turn muddy by next week. Currently the docks have been pulled out of the water to protect them from getting battered by the storms. If you plan on launching solo you’ll have to beach your boat. Fishing has remained constant and the bigger fish are beginning to move up. The reaction bite can be hot and cold depending on weekly conditions. The finesse bite remains good and is a sure way to put numbers in the boat. There are fish consistently holding deep as 35’-50’ that are falling for jigs, tubes and darter heads. The fish that are moving shallow have been moving up and down from 5’-15’ and are sporadically located as they are roaming for flooded out terrestrial forage. They seem to mostly be scattered in areas with rock or red mud, but are even still spread out in those areas as I’m not finding many fish on any one piece of structure. Covering lots of water to find them is a must but seems to be where the better sized fish are. Hope this helps if your heading there on your next outing. If you’re looking for an in-depth breakdown of the lake and great day of fishing you can book a trip with me.
