It was one heck of a fall here at Lake Almanor, featuring an extended period of pleasant weather and some outstanding fishing. The main players were the lake's famous Trophy Rainbow Trout with a few Browns in the mix as well. Moving out of their summer time haunts, the fish strapped on the feed bags and started chowing down ahead of winter. The aggression level ramped up and these fish were hammering our baits and making spectacular runs as well as some impressive acrobatic skyward leaps during the fights. During the fall, as the water cools and the lake turns over, fish can be found at a variety of depths but the most exciting action was taking place in the top 15 feet of water in areas that were holding feed for the trout including pond smelt, snails, crawdads, leaches as well as some late season aquatic bugs.
Currently fall has given way to winter and the fish are spread through out the lake again searching for food with pond smelt being the food of choice for most. We will continue to run charters here at Lake Almanor through out the winter as weather allows, taking advantage of the best winter trout bite northeastern California has to offer. If you are interested in a winter trout excursion please get a hold of us to check availability. Speaking of the weather, so far so good, we are off to a pretty good start. Recent storms have dropped rain and snow in the Almanor basin which will all eventually end up in the lake. A good supply of water means happy fish and ensures the future health of the lake. We look forward to seeing you on the water.
