Substantial drop in flows out of Boca Reservoir on Thursday

There was a substantial drop in flows out of Boca Reservoir on Thursday the 1st, which caused a decrease of 175 CFS below the confluence, and as of today the flows at Farad are around 185 CFS. Expect a few days of slow fishing as the fish look to adjust to this sudden change, and then it should be back to normal starting as early as next week. This drop in flows will make fishing streamers or dries a great option as fish will be more likely to see these offerings when the water is lower.

If nymphing, using clear or white indicators and less split shot than normal should be some changes made, but with precipitation all week, using attractors such as stones, eggs and worms will be especially effective, however we still recommend pairing these with smaller baetis and midge patterns. The lower river past Sparks is fishing well and should continue to do so throughout the entire winter. Down here there is little to no snow, warmer weather and some potentially great dry fly and streamer fishing, so for those living or staying in Truckee, this is a great option to get off the hill and get there fishing fix in through the winter months and is absolutely worth the license fee.
