Eagle Lake Fish Report

Eagle Lake - Susanville, CA (Lassen County)

It is transition time.  The Eagle Lake Trout are on the move.  One day you'll catch them in one spot, the next day ZERO.  The surface water temperature is approaching 70 degrees. Fishing action was solid this past week.  Larger fish, 2-3+lbs, are still being caught EARLY in shallow water.  Smaller trout, 1-1.5lb, are being taken by trollers later in the morning. We are starting to see Tui Chub minnows in large numbers under the docks at the Spalding Launch Ramp.  These minnows will supply a large part of the Eagle Lake Trout diet in the coming months.

Trolling has been best early on the west side of the lake from about 1/2 mile south of Pelican Pt. all the way down to Wildcat Pt.  Troll your baits 150 feet behind the boat in 8-12 feet of water from the surface down to 5-6 feet deep.  Fishing these water depths will take you pretty close into shore.  This inshore bite will usually taper off after the sun hits the water.  When this occurs, move out to 30-50 feet of water and troll your baits from 6-12 feet deep.  The deeper water bite is best from Shrimp Island down to Wildcat Pt.  Best trolled baits are Sep's #2 watermelon grubs.  Other anglers report that  green Needlefish are also producing fish.

Bobber fishing has been good for those fishermen that fish EARLY.  Shrimp Island  has been producing for the bobber fishermen.  They are anchoring in 15-20 feet of water and setting their threaded night crawlers 8-10 below a slip bobber.
