Ted Cribari of Los Gatos and Al Hurwitz of Saratoga trolled both the eastern and western shores of Los Vaqueros Reservoir extensively on April 11, 2024. It was a tough day for us, with only two bites (one Trout that didn’t stay pinned), and one very nice Striped Bass caught by Ted (pictured here). The Striper was caught in Peninsula Cove trolling a Speedy Shiner 10 feet below the surface. It measured 19.5 inches, weighed 3.25 pounds, and was released in excellent condition. The water temperature ranged from around 60 to 64 degrees (it was a hot day). Our other trolled artificials included a Streamer fly, Jointed Rapalas, and a 3/8 oz Kastmaster.

A lot of algae on the water’s surface, likely due to the recent warm weather, made the trolling less than ideal.

The folks using PowerBait did much better than we did, particularly in the back of coves in shallow water. A number of those using a variety of baits caught limits of Trout.

We’ll be back soon to give it another shot!
All the best,
Dr. Al Hurwitz, Saratoga
