Creek Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout
Canyon Lake, located in the Superstition Wilderness just northeast of Apache Junction, is a stunning desert reservoir surrounded by towering cliffs and rugged terrain. Part of the Salt River chain, it covers approximately 950 acres and is known for its dramatic canyon walls, recreational boating, and diverse warmwater fishery. Anglers are drawn here for largemouth bass, yellow bass, catfish, sunfish, and stocked trout in winter months.

Largemouth bass are the primary target for many anglers. Spring and fall provide the best action, particularly during the spawn when bass stage in rocky coves and submerged brush lines. Drop shots, Texas rigs, jerkbaits, and crankbaits all produce well. During summer, anglers shift deeper and focus on ledges, humps, and submerged trees with jigs and Carolina rigs.

Yellow bass are abundant and provide fast-paced action year-round, especially on spoons, small jigs, and cut bait. These aggressive feeders often school in deeper water and respond well to vertical jigging or trolling. Canyon Lake is one of the few places in Arizona where yellow bass are prominent and catchable in quantity.

Catfish—both channel and flathead—can be found in deeper pools and near drop-offs. Chicken liver, cut bait, or live bluegill are standard offerings for nighttime catfishing.

The lake is stocked with rainbow trout from November through March by Arizona Game and Fish. These trout are typically caught near the marina and Boulder Creek using PowerBait, salmon eggs, and small spoons.

Canyon Lake is also home to bluegill and redear sunfish, which provide great shore fishing opportunities for families. Anglers target these panfish with worms or small grubs along rocky points and weedy banks.

Boating is the most effective way to fish Canyon Lake, but shoreline access is available near the Boulder Recreation Area, Acacia Day Use Area, and near the marina. The lake is very popular on weekends, especially with recreational boaters, so early mornings or weekdays are ideal for serious anglers.

Facilities include a marina, boat ramps, restrooms, and nearby camping at Tortilla Campground. Access is via the scenic and winding Route 88 (Apache Trail), which may be closed at times due to rockslides or weather, so check road conditions before visiting.
