Mammoth Creek - Mammoth Lakes, CA

Creek Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Mammoth Creek is a small, scenic freestone stream flowing from Twin Lakes through the town of Mammoth Lakes and eastward to join the Owens River system. It offers productive dry fly fishing for wild and stocked trout in a variety of high-country environments including forested runs, meadow glides, and sage-lined banks.

Trout range from 8–12 inches, with occasional wild browns reaching 14–16 inches. The creek supports a wide range of aquatic insect life, including mayflies, caddis, and midges. Prime fishing occurs from late spring through fall, with dry-dropper rigs and terrestrial patterns dominating much of the season.

Effective flies include elk hair caddis, parachute adams, hoppers, and ants trailed by beadhead nymphs such as pheasant tails or hare’s ears. Light tippet (5x or 6x), stealthy approaches, and accurate casting are critical due to the creek’s narrow profile and clear water.

Mammoth Creek is highly accessible, with pullouts and trails near Sherwin Creek Road, Old Mammoth, and the Mammoth Creek Park area. Its proximity to town makes it an excellent choice for quick sessions, casting practice, or a peaceful diversion from more crowded waters.

Though it lacks the size and fame of nearby Hot Creek or the Owens, Mammoth Creek rewards finesse and observation with consistent trout action and a stunning Sierra setting—ideal for anglers who enjoy technical dry fly fishing on small streams.
