Coming to the museum's Changing Gallery in October the IGFA will present a special exhibit on the background of "Catch and Release" fishing.
In the 1950' and 60's, Fort Lauderdale gained the reputation as the ???sportfishing capital of the world' and tourists mounted thousands of fish each year. Thousands of other fish, particularly sailfish, were also taken and not mounted as captains could earn big commissions only after killing the catch.
This trend was unsustainable and led to the concept we all know now as ???Catch and Release.' The majority of all sailfish caught today are released alive and mounts are produced without the need for the actual fish. Sailfish populations have rebounded and the fishing has improved dramatically. ???Catch and Release' is here to stay.
This new special exhibit will feature start-to-finish mounts, taxidermy facts, an exclusive video from IGFA Hall of Famer Mark Sosin and spectacular release photos.
