September was another action-packed month for the Golden Gate Fishermen’s Association (GGFA). Our members stayed busy doing what they do best, advocating for our fleet and the health of our fisheries.

The month began with an epic fall salmon opener, and the fishing did not disappoint. Member boats were full every day, and our coastal communities came alive with busy marinas, packed launch ramps, and thriving local businesses. The salmon bite was phenomenal, and the excitement was felt across the entire fleet.

Later in the month, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that the fall quota of 7,500 salmon had been reached, triggering in-season management to close the remaining open dates for 2025. While the season was brief, the success of this opener showed how vital our fishery is to anglers and coastal economies alike.

Meanwhile, GGFA board members continued to lead on advocacy. After being instrumental in the removal of all state and federal depth restrictions for rockfish and lingcod, our member boats have been taking full advantage and reporting outstanding rockfishing throughout the month of September. This is also extremely exciting news for the upcoming Crab Rockfish Combo season starting November 1st, because now, while fishing hoop nets, our member boats will be able to target rockfish in any depth and closer to their crab gear.

Behind the scenes, our Crab Feed Committee has been hard at work planning the March 28, 2026 Crab Feed Fundraiser at the Marin Rod & Gun Club. Tickets are limited and selling quickly. Make sure to reserve your tickets now at https://www.ggfa.net to be part of this unforgettable evening.

Looking ahead, GGFA board members are preparing for the October California Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission meeting. GGFA’s Andy Guiliano will be in attendance to advocate for the use of surface gear with hoop nets, ensuring our fleet’s voice is heard on this important issue.
