Calder Reservoir - Vernal, UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Tiger Trout, Colorado River Cutthroat Trout, Grass Carp
Calder Reservoir, just outside Vernal, is a strictly managed fly-fishing-only lake offering exceptional catch-and-release trout fishing. Anglers visiting Calder must use artificial flies or lures, and all trout must be released immediately, as per Utah Division of Wildlife Resources regulations. These rules preserve the reservoir’s robust populations of rainbow and tiger trout, many of which reach sizes over 20 inches.

The lake’s cold, clear waters support abundant insect life, making it ideal for fly anglers. Leech, scud, and chironomid patterns are highly effective, especially when fished slowly under an indicator. Calder’s environment favors small watercraft like float tubes and kayaks, although limited shoreline fishing is available.

Best fishing occurs in spring and fall during major hatches and cooler water temperatures. Calder sees moderate angling pressure due to its strict rules, creating a low-impact, high-reward fishery. There are no amenities or developed access points at the reservoir, so visitors should be self-sufficient.

For those with the skill and patience to navigate its technical challenges, Calder offers one of the best trophy trout experiences in Utah. Always consult the latest DWR regulations before fishing Calder, as compliance ensures the continued success of this exceptional fishery.
