Lake Eiler - Thousand Lakes WIlderness, CA

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Lake Eiler, within California's Thousand Lakes Wilderness, offers a premier backcountry angling experience. This pristine alpine lake primarily supports rainbow trout and brook trout, sustained by natural reproduction and historical stocking, providing consistent action.

Angling methodologies are straightforward: bait fishing with worms or PowerBait from accessible shorelines, or lure fishing with small spinners and spoons. Fly fishing is highly effective, utilizing nymphs and dry flies, demanding stealth and delicate presentation due to water clarity.

Access is challenging, requiring a significant hike into the wilderness; carry-in watercraft are common. All anglers must possess a valid California fishing license. Strict adherence to current California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) regulations, including specific bag limits (often restrictive) and seasonal access, is compulsory. Compliance with wilderness area rules and Leave No Trace principles is paramount for legal adherence and the preservation of this unique natural resource.
