Cahuilla Lake - La Quinta, CA
Lake Information
| Fish Species: | Channel Catfish, Rainbow Trout |
Lake Cahuilla is a 135-acre reservoir situated at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains in La Quinta, California. Managed by Riverside County Parks, this man-made lake is known for its seasonal trout and catfish fisheries and is a favored destination for families, campers, and anglers in the Coachella Valley region. The lake does not allow boating, making it exclusively a shore-fishing destination, with ADA-compliant fishing piers and easy access throughout its perimeter.
Rainbow trout are stocked heavily during the winter and early spring months, generally between November and March. These cold-water fish are typically caught on PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and small inline spinners. Early morning and late afternoon hours offer the best chances, particularly near the deeper water close to the inlet.
In the summer, channel catfish take over as the primary target species. Stocked frequently, these fish are easily caught using cut mackerel, chicken liver, or commercially prepared stink baits. Evening and night fishing are especially productive, and the lake occasionally hosts night fishing events.
While not heavily promoted, the lake does contain populations of largemouth bass and bluegill. These species are generally fished with worms or light jigs near shoreline vegetation and submerged structure. With modern facilities, easy access, and regular fish stocking, Lake Cahuilla remains one of the top fishing lakes in the greater Palm Springs area.
