Ackre Lake - Alpine, AZ

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Ackre Lake is a 2-acre, high-elevation catch-and-release fishery located near Alpine, Arizona, at over 8,600 feet in the White Mountains. The lake is managed for Apache trout, a native and threatened species, and is open to fly and artificial lure-only angling. Fishing is typically best from late May through September.

Anglers will find success using dry flies, nymphs, and small streamers on fly gear. Terrestrials like hoppers and ants are productive in summer. Spinning rods are permitted with barbless artificial lures such as spinners and spoons. Apache trout average 10–14 inches and are consistently stocked by the Arizona Game and Fish Department to support conservation and recreational goals.

Ackre Lake is entirely accessible from shore, and float tubes are allowed but seldom necessary. Primitive camping is available nearby, but no services are provided at the lake. The setting is serene, surrounded by pine and spruce forest, with opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography.

Strict catch-and-release ethics are encouraged to preserve the fragile Apache trout population. Anglers should come prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather and carry all supplies in and out.

Ackre Lake offers a quiet, conservation-focused experience for anglers looking to enjoy Arizona’s high country and native trout in a peaceful setting.
