Lower Bowns Reservoir - Boulder, UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Tiger Trout
Lower Bowns Reservoir, located near Boulder, Utah, is a quiet, mid-elevation trout fishery on the eastern edge of Boulder Mountain. At 7,300 feet, this 180-acre reservoir offers consistent rainbow trout fishing with opportunities to catch brook and tiger trout as well.

Rainbow trout are stocked regularly and respond well to PowerBait, spinners, and small spoons. Brook trout often gather near inlets and rocky structure, while tiger trout patrol deeper waters. Fly anglers find success with woolly buggers, dry flies, and terrestrials during summer hatches.

Lower Bowns is easily accessible, with open shoreline suitable for bank anglers and a campground nearby managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Float tubes and small boats allow access to drop-offs and mid-lake structure where larger trout often stage.

The best fishing typically occurs in late spring and early fall when water temperatures are favorable. Irrigation demands can lower water levels in late summer, so planning visits around stable water conditions is recommended.

This reservoir is managed under general trout regulations, though anglers should verify seasonal rules in the Utah Fishing Guidebook. With its remote charm, reliable action, and lack of crowds, Lower Bowns offers a rewarding destination for trout anglers exploring southern Utah’s Boulder Mountain region.
