Hurricane Lake - McNary, AZ

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Hurricane Lake, located near McNary, AZ, on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, is a small 3-acre trout lake managed by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. Anglers must obtain a tribal permit to fish this water. The lake is seasonally stocked with rainbow trout, offering short-term but productive fishing from late spring through early summer.

Trout fishing is best shortly after stocking, with baits like PowerBait, worms, and salmon eggs producing consistent results. Anglers may also succeed with small spinners and flies during cool, early hours. Fish typically measure 10–14 inches and are often concentrated near the eastern and northern shores.

Boating and float tubes are prohibited, making Hurricane Lake a shoreline-only fishery. While the lake lacks developed facilities, it offers a quiet, easily accessible option for anglers looking to avoid crowds. Its proximity to Sunrise Lake and other White Mountain fishing waters makes it ideal for inclusion in a multi-lake itinerary.

Because the lake is shallow, summer temperatures can reduce trout activity, so the best window for fishing is late May through early July. Wildlife viewing and pine forest scenery add to the experience, especially for families or campers in the area.

Hurricane Lake is ideal for casual anglers seeking peace, reliable trout fishing, and access to Arizona’s high-country tribal lands.
