Don Castro Regional Park is a 101-acre urban retreat located on the border of Hayward and Castro Valley, California. Established in 1964 when San Lorenzo Creek was dammed by the Alameda Flood Control and Water Conservation District, the park features a swim lagoon and an adjacent reservoir that provide both recreation and natural beauty. The lagoon’s clear blue water is a local favorite, especially in warmer months. A large shallow area is roped off for children, making it a safe spot for families. The lagoon is supplied with water from the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which also stocks the nearby lake with trout and catfish from October to April.
The adjacent Don Castro Reservoir is a peaceful fishing destination nestled in the rolling hills of Hayward. It offers opportunities to catch rainbow trout, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish. Trout are especially active near the dam in cooler months, while bass and catfish thrive in warmer weather. Though boating and swimming are not allowed in the lake, shoreline hikers are treated to a surprising array of wildlife including turtles, frogs, ducks, raccoons, and deer. This hidden gem offers both seasoned and beginner anglers a chance to enjoy nature close to home.
