Trinity River - Stuart Fork - Trinity Lake, CA

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout
Stuart Fork of the Trinity River is a remote, high-country tributary located within the Trinity Alps Wilderness of Northern California. Flowing through rugged granite terrain and dense forest, Stuart Fork delivers exceptional wild trout fishing in a pristine and uncrowded setting. It is best known for its population of wild rainbow trout, though brown trout may also be encountered near its confluence with Trinity Lake.

The fishery is defined by classic freestone stream characteristics—riffles, plunge pools, and undercut banks—providing ideal holding water for trout. Fly anglers will find success using attractor dries, caddis and mayfly patterns, beadhead nymphs, and small streamers. Light spinning gear with small spinners can also be effective, though fly fishing is the preferred method.

Access is primarily via the Stuart Fork Trail, beginning at Bridge Camp Trailhead, which serves both hikers and backcountry anglers. The best fishing conditions occur from June through October, once snowmelt recedes and flows stabilize. Primitive camping, no services, and bear country precautions apply.

This is a wild, catch-and-release fishery that prioritizes preservation of a sensitive ecosystem. Stuart Fork is an ideal destination for experienced anglers seeking solitude, self-reliance, and high-quality native trout fishing in one of California’s most remote alpine watersheds.
