East Fork of Black River - AZ

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Apache Trout
The East Fork of the Black River, near Alpine, AZ, is one of the premier freestone trout streams in the state, offering quality fishing for wild brown trout, stocked rainbow trout, and occasional Apache trout. Flowing through pine forest and high-country meadows, this river provides ideal habitat and conditions for both fly fishing and spin casting.

Rainbow trout are stocked at several public access points during spring and summer. These fish are readily caught on worms, spinners, and PowerBait. Fly anglers find success with dry flies, nymphs, and woolly buggers.

Brown trout are wild and wary. These fish inhabit deeper pools and cut banks, best targeted with streamers or terrestrials during low-light hours. Browns grow to over 16 inches and provide a challenging, rewarding pursuit.

Access is available off Forest Roads 276 and 24, with popular fishing areas near Buffalo Crossing and Diamond Rock. The river is wadable, though slippery rocks and current require care.

The river’s cold, clear water and structured runs make it a destination fishery for anglers seeking mountain stream solitude and trout diversity. With nearby camping and summer accessibility, the East Fork of the Black River is a must-visit for any serious Arizona trout angler.
