Fremont River - Hanksville, Utah

River Information

Fish Species: Brown Trout
The Fremont River is a diverse, multi-zone fishery that stretches from alpine trout water in the Fishlake Mountains to desert warmwater reaches near Hanksville. In its upper stretches near Loa and Johnson Valley, the river supports wild brown trout and stocked rainbows, offering consistent action for fly and spin anglers.

The best trout fishing occurs above Loa, where cold, clear water supports insect hatches and aggressive fish. Nymphs, dry flies, and small streamers work well in riffles and pools. Mid-river stretches around Bicknell provide more accessible fishing with public easements, though irrigation draws can alter flows seasonally.

Farther downstream, the river warms and slows. Near Hanksville, anglers encounter smallmouth bass and catfish in deeper pools and eddies. Worms, crankbaits, and cut bait are productive in these lower sections.

This river’s varied character makes it a unique destination, appealing to both coldwater and warmwater anglers. Each reach offers distinct seasonal windows, so understanding the section you intend to fish is essential. Access varies from well-marked trails to private land—always check for signage and property lines.

Anglers should consult the Utah Fishing Guidebook for section-specific rules. The Fremont River rewards exploration and provides year-round fishing diversity in central and southeastern Utah.
