Middle Provo River - UT

River Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout
The Middle Provo River, running between Jordanelle and Deer Creek Reservoirs, is widely regarded as one of Utah’s top trout fisheries. With consistent flows, prolific insect life, and abundant wild brown trout, this blue-ribbon tailwater offers exceptional year-round fishing.

Brown trout average 14–18 inches, with trophies over 20 inches regularly caught. Rainbow trout are also present, especially near stocking areas. The river is managed under artificial-only regulations, and anglers may keep up to two trout daily. Most, however, practice catch-and-release.

Nymphing with sow bugs, baetis, and midges is effective year-round, while summer brings excellent dry fly fishing with PMDs, caddis, and green drakes. Terrestrials and streamers are productive in late summer and fall. The river is easily accessible via Highway 32 and offers good wading opportunities.

Flows can change due to dam releases, so anglers should check current discharge rates. Winter fishing is surprisingly productive thanks to stable water temperatures and low pressure.

The Middle Provo River stands out for its technical water, healthy fish populations, and fly-friendly conditions. Whether you're an experienced fly angler or refining your skills, this tailwater offers a rewarding and educational experience.
