Colorado River - Nelson - Nelson, NV

River Information

Fish Species: Striped Bass
The Colorado River near Nelson, Nevada, provides a rugged, lightly pressured angling experience ideal for targeting striped bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and panfish. This area lies near the upper end of Lake Mohave, transitioning from river to reservoir, and offers excellent structure and solitude.

Nelson’s Landing is the primary access point, with a primitive dirt ramp suitable for small boats and kayaks. The area’s remoteness appeals to seasoned anglers seeking quality fishing away from the crowds.

Striped bass are abundant and best targeted during early morning or evening with swimbaits, jerkbaits, or live shad. These fish often patrol deeper drop-offs and rock points. Largemouth bass hold tight to submerged brush and rocks and strike soft plastics, jigs, and crankbaits, particularly during spring and fall.

Channel catfish are active year-round in slower waters and deeper pools. Anglers use cut bait, shrimp, and dough balls for consistent action. Sunfish and bluegill offer easy fishing along shallow coves and reeds.

There are no developed facilities or services, and anglers should bring all supplies, water, and safety gear. Cell coverage is limited.

For anglers looking to fish a remote stretch of the Colorado River surrounded by dramatic desert cliffs and minimal traffic, Nelson offers a rewarding and scenic escape with good multi-species potential.
