Upper Owens Fish Report 06-19-07

Owens River - CA

6-19-2007

In addition to the migratory fish moving upstream from Crowley Lake to seek the more oxygenated water the river has to offer this time of year, the DFG has been planting a significant amount of fish that the Hot Creek Hatchery can not put into other areas due to the NZMS infestation in the feeder springs.?? This fact coupled with a below average run-off has made the inlet and monument section very productive.?? There are a lot of anglers to compete with on weekends and holidays, but plenty of water to work during the mid-week periods.

Nymphing with tiger and zebra midges #16-20 and flashback pt's 16-20 will get you into fish.?? Look for the fish rising to pmd's and afternoon caddis #16-20 if you wish to fish the surface feeders.?? Streamers can be red hot for the "off the truck" critters if you get clean enough water without significant free floating weed to mess up your presentation.?? Spruce-A-Bu's, Loebergs, and Blood Sucking Vanderleeches #8-12 will whack em' when used with a medium sinking tip line.

Don Lee was guided by the ever versatile Drifters guide Two Bug Doug on the Upper Owens a short time back and had "the best day of fly fishing in my entire life!"?? Don caught and released 100 fish on nymphs and dries.?? Don did not want to take the chance of injuring any fish for pictures and released them while in the water.?? Great day Don, congratulations!
