Prospects for both local and ocean salmon fishing this year are exceptionally bright.

Good rainfall for the previous few years, very low fishing pressure, and various other favorable environmental factors mean there may be a lot of salmon out there.

California's proposed regulations look very good for local anglers, but they are not set in stone yet. Federal regulations determined by the Pacific Fisheries Management Council had to be finalized before Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California could approve their salmon rules, limits, and seasons. Those new Federal regulations were finally announced at 3:30 PM on Thursday.

Highlights of the proposed [but not yet final] local regulations will include a Feather River salmon season running from July 16 to October 15, with a daily bag limit of two Chinook salmon. For the first time in several years, salmon fishing may even be allowed at the infamous "Thermalito Afterbay Outlet".

Sacramento River salmon anglers may see a season running from July 16 to December 16 from the Highway 113 Bridge to the Red Bluff Diversion Dam, and from August 1 to December 16 from the Red Bluff Diversion Dam to the Deschutes Bridge. Daily bag limit will also be two Chinook salmon.
