The offshore billfish bite has slowed up a little and has resulted in about a third of the boats landing a billfish for the past week and end of the year report. On the other-hand, the inshore super pangas had terrific fishing results that produced a bonanza catch of red snappers and more. The overall offshore catch for 23 days fished reflected 3 stripers, (1 released) 5 sailfish, (3 released) 1 yellowfin tuna and 2 dorado while the inshore super pangas, reporting in for 11 days fished, reflected limits of red snappers, 50 triggerfish, 20 permit and 3 Spanish mackerel, (aka Sierra). Barring any significant water temperature changes we expect the bite to continue right into the New Year with an upward push following the coming full moon on January 5, 2015.
Mazatlan Climate: There were partly cloudy days with a mostly sunny weekend and temps that ranged from a cool morning 53 degrees to 81 degrees for daytime highs and a 65% humidity ratio. Light jackets are necessary for mornings and evenings.
Sea Conditions: Surface breezes were flowing in mostly from the northwesterly directions from almost calm to about 12 mph. Sea temps remained stable and good at 76 inshore to 78 offshore. Overall, it was excellent fishing conditions for the year end close.
Best Fishing Area: No specific area was noted for the offshore fishing as the boats were covering several different areas throughout the week, searching for a concentration.
Best Lure/Bait: Rigged trolling baits were most productive for the billfish & dorado. Tuna was taken on a smaller tuna feather.
Bait Supply: A good bait supply that included fresh baits for rigged trolling and a good live bait supply at the $1.00 per bait rate.

Even better, is the fish are all in the quality size ranges and probably will average 25 lbs. Adding to the mix of fishing fun is the fair amount of wahoo being landed. High billfish boat for the week was the "Tuna Time", skippered by Captain Roberto Marquez, landing &...... Read More
