Short bursts of high intensity amidst plenty of leisurely fishing made for a fine day of action on 80 - 125 pound yellowfin. A few nice yellowtail in the mix added some welcome variety but the surface show on the tuna was the real bonus. From mid morning to early evening those tuna were blowing out all around the boat aggressively pursuing fleeing sardines in an epic show of acrobatic prowess. As an angler and Captain I can’t think of anything more motivational than beautiful grade tuna flying out of the water mere yards from the boat. The sight prompts a surge of adrenaline that can only be quelled by setting the hook in one of those incredible fish.

Beckoning tomorrow is a shift into yellowtail mode as we are very near our saturation point on these beautiful grade tuna. Not that we are near limits; we’re not even close. But this grade of fish adds up quickly in quantity. When opportunity of this caliber manifests it is crucial to self regulate. I have encouraged all anglers for years to manage their catch based on individual need/goals. In short the “good old days” of taking a massive quantity of fish then wondering what to do with it all, or pass off to “charity” at the conclusion of a voyage, are long past.

Foremost is the responsibility of the vessel and crew to produce a premium quality product. This is accomplished through professional attention to the product and proper refrigeration. To state it again opportunities of this caliber come with responsibility. I ask that all anglers, and my colleagues, take this into account.

Photo today captures the atmosphere on board beautifully. Long time Royal Star angler and Izorline chartermaster Tom Kurata is all smiles with the boys in his moment of triumph.
