The Ogden River below Pineview Dam has a robust population of brown trout. We sampled two reaches of the Ogden River this fall, from the Indian Trail trailhead to Wall Avenue in Ogden. We found brown trout in all of the reaches we sampled. Other species — including rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, black crappie, yellow perch and even tiger muskie — were also found. Winter fishing on the Ogden River can be great, but small flies such as midges will be most productive. Streamers may also entice some brown trout into biting. Spinners and jigs can be good in deeper pools. Bait can also be used, so don’t overlook nightcrawlers or dead minnows. Ice will accumulate on exposed rocks and banks.
