There are some monster trout in the deeper pools of Hot Creek. The dry action is still excellent and anglers are reeling in trout on the nymphs. Caddis hatches are occurring all day long. Tent Wing Caddis can be used all over the creek. Elk Hair Caddis in sizes 16 to 20 are great. Callibaetis Cripples work wonders. Crane flies are smoking (an excellent choice for dropping a smaller fly behind), any size. Madam X terresterial patterns are magic. Hoppers and ants are also bringing in fish. Parachute Adams are go-to flies on this moving body of water. Look to put that dry both near and far. Cast the fly to drift along the far side of the creek. Get ready for the strike. Per different times of the day... Blue Wing Olives are coming off the water as early as 8AM. Another great fly is a midge crystal. The fish are slurping midges and emergers in the morning. Fore-an-Aft is a great morning pattern. Tricos are taking fish. Drop one behind a Crane Fly. PMD's for mid-morning are landing fish when the mayfly hatch begins. Mosquito or caddis patterns for the afternoon. For subsurface action... scuds in olive reel in trout as do San Juan Worms. On sunny days, go to a Franks Crystal Nymph or a Flashback Beadhead Pheasant Tail. Either of these flies light up like a Vegas dancer. Take that trout to the dance floor! Fish the waters between the vegetation. Put the fly at the top of the channel where the vegetation begins and get ready for the strike at the bottom. That good ol' trusty BH Hare's Ear will also stump the trout. In three words... Hot Creek Rocks!
