Boulder Mountain Lakes - Boulder, UT

Lake Information

Fish Species: Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout, Tiger Trout, Arctic Grayling, Tiger Muskellunge, Colorado River Cutthroat Trout, Splake
The Boulder Mountain Lakes—like Lake Mary and Lake Ruth—sit above 9,000 feet on Utah’s Boulder Mountain. These high-alpine waters harbor native Bonneville cutthroat, brook trout, and stocked rainbows amid aspen groves and mountain peaks.

Cutthroats typically run 12–16 inches, brookies 8–12, and rainbows 10–14 inches. All species respond well to fly and light spin tactics in the relatively shallow lakes. Fly anglers use adams or caddis dries during summer hatches; nymphs, midges, and leeches also work.

Float tubes and kayaks are popular, as gas motors are not allowed. Campsites and ramps are available, but access roads open seasonally (June–October).

Pressure is light, producing more cautious fish and a more authentic fly-fishing experience. Vegetation can affect clarity—adapt your tactics accordingly. Early morning and evening offer the best activity.

If you're seeking secluded high-country trout in a serene setting, the Boulder Mountain Lakes are a top pick for alpine anglers.
