Panguitch Lake will undergo a dam replacement project that started in fall 2025. The new structure will be built immediately downstream of the existing dam. Consequently, complete draining down to the natural lake level is not anticipated. However, the lake level will be noticeably lower compared to the last few years. It is anticipated that the construction will be finished mid-to-late spring 2026. This essential project replaces the approximately 100-year-old structure, ensuring the continued integrity and quality of the Panguitch Lake fishery for many years to come. Ice-off happened late February this year. Spring brings hungry trout into the shallows to feed, along with some of the best fishing of the year. While some anglers think that "ice-off" fishing only happens while the ice is melting, you can actually catch plenty of fish for up to a month or more after the ice comes off. The fish are affected more by water temperature than the presence of ice, so they usually get more active after the ice is gone and the water temperature warms into the mid-50s. You can find good to excellent fishing for all trout species with various tackle. Boat and float tube anglers can also find good success in the spring, but remember that a lot of fish are close to shore while temps warm up so you may still want to fish in the shallows. Check out the Panguitch Lake entry on the Fish Utah map for more spring fishing techniques and tips.
