THE CABO SAN LUCAS FISHING REPORT FOR THE GAVIOTA SPORTFISHING FLEET AND FISH CABO FLEET

The billfish bit was just above the 50-50 chances this past week from Cabo San Lucas. In talking with Captain Roberto Marquez, there were really god signs of lots of billfish between Finisterra Hotel and Cabo Falso. They were seeing lots of feeders & tailers in this area along with an occasional dorado but the bite didn't work out for all of the boats, including one of his boats, "Tuna Time". While a lot of fish were being seen there was plenty of boat pressure in the area, making the catching more difficult. However, some of the boats were doing well and had landed a couple of stripers while others were looking on. The overall fish counts don't really provide a very good picture of the action in the area but like Roberto said, "everyday is a different day and the area is full of sea life action". The overall combined fish counts reflected a total of 8 stripers, (7 released) 2 wahoo, 10 Sierra and 22 dorado and the "Gaviota VII" was the high billfish boat with 3 stripers, 8 dorado and 2 wahoo for their 5 days fished.


Cabo Climate: A mostly sunny & warm week in the beginning and changing to a wet, rainy and cloudy weekend. Temps ranged from 63 nights to 83 daytime highs and a humidity level at 67%.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes ranged from calm mornings to 14 mph with Saturday blustering up to 19 mph. Cooler waters starting to push through the area on both sides of the peninsula. The shoreline to about 15 miles offshore from Golden Gate to Jaime Bank and southerly across the 1,000 fathom curve all at 73 degrees. Outside the Golden Gate Bank and the Jaime Bank and southerly and wrapping around Cabo and into the Sea of Cortez side, including the 1150 fathom spot and the Cabrillo Sea Mount, rising up to 75-77 degrees.

Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was best for the billfish and for an occasional dorado as well as a few fish being taken on the artificials, too.

Best Fishing Area: The better fishing area for our catches was in the Pozo de Cota area on the Pacific side of Cabo but clearly, the Cabo Falso area was the real "hot spot" by mid-week and was likely to continue.

Live Bait Supply: Remains good with plenty of caballitos available at the $3.00 per bait rate.
